This One’s For Buck Shirt

I was playing around with some shirt ideas the day after the Giants had won punching their Ticket to face the Royals. I started with an idea for a small market big heart design (you can see here) but quickly went in another direction. I was sitting there making the shirt I was going to have made to wear to the game in SF when the thought of how cool it would have been to hear Buck O’neil talk about this crazy run the Royals have been on the last 3 months.

That thought made me think win it for Buck. I then came up with the idea for the shirt at is going to be sold by the Negro League Museum in Kansas City. I went to twitter and started tweeting anyone and everyone trying to get someone to put me in contact with someone that could get the Royals OK to move forward with my idea. Later that day Bob Kendrick contacted on twitter. I shared a few images with him and the next day we talked on the phone. Bob loved the idea and he ran with it. By the end of the day Friday he had gotten all of the OK’s and a printer.

The shirts should be in next week so contact the Negro League Museum at one of their events or online to get a shirt that looks good, pays tribute to a Legend, and raises some money for the museum.

I then decided to spend a lot of money on a pair of tickets in KC for the game on wednesday. Hopefully the first batch of shirts will be in so both my Dad and I can wear my shirt to the game.

#SendTheRunner What Is It & Why Should You Care #TakeTheCrown #Royals

SENDTHERUNNER#SendTheRunner is my hair brain idea to get some Kansas City Company to sponsor me to go to as many Royals ALCS and World Series (fingers crossed) games as possible. Why call it #SendTheRunner? Kansas City has the most stolen bases and often when someone steals they say send the runner. So, I thought that was cute.

photo

Yes, I shaved. Yes, I am the guy from that long and stupid Royals MLBFanCave video. Why didn’t they pick me? MLB hates the Royals thats why it has nothing to do with the failed psych eval. That Doctor was a Quack I will have you know, like Brown is a school. It is a color so stop playing Doc.

Why me because it does me no good to send you. I would love to bring some friends from twitter (@KCRoyalman & @Koreanfan_KC just to name a few) along with me on the wild trip. I would even love to bring along a random contest winner (hint hint radio stations). I will even fly to Korean (if you buy my ticket Looking at you Korean Air) and make SungWoo’s boss let him leave work. We will be crossing the country with free tickets, Royals gear, Ribs, beverages, towels, rib bibs, and whatever else you have to give away to random Kansas City Royals Fans we meet along the way. Setting up KC Style tailgate parties in Baltimore and whatever NL city we end up in (fingers crossed) free for all Royals fan in attendance.

We can drive to Baltimore (car dealers of Kansas City) or we can fly (Airline Companies). Maybe you have a limo company and want us to arrive in style. Hell I will even take Amtrak and Greyhound if you guys want to pay. Maybe stay at a Holiday Inn, Motel 6, A Super 8, a Drury Hotel, Marriott, Sleep Inn, Comfort Inn, Red Roof Inn, Holidy Express, Extended Stay America, Dave’s No Tell Motel, or maybe even a Howard Johnson’s with a pool and free breakfast. We could even stay at your house if you want.

My pitch is this I am poor an creative and your company is rich and poor on creative. You could pay your media buyer and ad firm lots of money to make you a bad local spot that you will have to pay thousands for to get on tv once. You can pay to hire the radio voice guy to do a 30 second spot for you and will sound just like the arrive alive ad. Its up to you be original or fade into the ambient noise in our cars. Who is even going to be in their car during the game? It really is like throwing your money away. You might as well guy fat guys skinny jeans (which this fat guy will wear if that is what does it for you.)

OR

You could get me some tickets from I don’t know where maybe there is an oak tree with tickets on it.

(hopefully lower bowl just saying) and pay for me to get to the game ( maybe you sell a product from a pump that is over priced for no reason that could get us there) , have a place to stay, and a little something to eat ( like maybe a pizza from ________ and let me video it all with my new _______ phone. I will tweet, pin, post, stick, lick, paste, etc. You could also just get me the tickets and watch what stupid things I do to get food and shelter. It could be like the amazing race, planes, trains, and automobiles, and Bladerunner had a baby that likes baseball.

SENDTHERUNNER 9

Why should you pick me? Well I don’t see anyone else offering and it is this idea or intern in pink shoes ( I own pink shoes but mine are better I’m sure) idea with the cat in a glove ad.

Trust me this is better than the cat glove. The cat in the glove is just dumb Bob stop pushing it! NO! ONE! Likes your CAT! NO! I am not buying a calendar of Mr. Zazzles for Christmas Gifts Stop! Asking!

SENDTHERUNNER3

I was born in 1985 the last time the Royals went to the World Series. I grew up at The K going to games with my Grandpa. I have been to several hundred Royals games in my life. I am the generation that was just old enough to have memories of good Royals team as a small child cementing our love for the Boys in Blue only to have to live through decades of teasing at the hands of our Cardinal loving classmates. I was once a mascot for Springfield Cardinals. I have been a baseball writer/photographer for baseball digest.com andI70baseball.com. I have great hair. I am a bubble off normal in a good way. I am the kind of stupid that people like to watch. I have a masters degree in sports admin. I own a camera. I have a flexible schedule. Did I mention I have good hair? I will dye it blue or cut it off if needed but that would be harsh. I was once ran over by a boat. I was in a TruTV pilot so you are not working with some random nobody. I also played Louie the Springfield Cardinals mascot in several local ad spots. I often do voiceovers of random peoples day at the mall while walking behind them creeping them out. I am cool I am listening to ___________ right now. Don’t you just love _______? I know I do.

SEND THE RUNNER 2

So, Corporate Kansas City you can go hire actors and run one or two ads or you can pick me and have weeks of content online for less money. Call you buddies over at company x, y, z and p. Throw all of your slush fund marketing money in a bag and hand it to me so this can happen. The people of Kansas City, NO!, the WORLD! want you to #SendTheRunner

SEND THE RUNNER 2

SENDTHERUNNER NED

Last idea and Gates you get the first shot at this because those are your ribs I used. We send me to the game with a bunch of shirts & bibs like this and ribs and every time the Royals score I hand out shirts, bibs, ribs, coupons for ribs, and bottles of sauce.

So, if you are a TV Station, Radio Station, BBQ Place, A Brewing Company in KC hint hint, a carpet place, a cellphone retailer, a bar, a car dealership, an airline, the city tourist people, a small family owned bouncy house company or anyone selling anything in Missouri this is for you.

Please someone make this happen I don’t want to live in a box down by the river to be able to go to the games. That’s right I had to sell the government cheese and the Van.

Kansas City Royals Trade Options

Let me first start by saying I am a diehard Royals fan.

Ok, lets look at the AL. The Royals are now in third place in the Central. The odds of the Tigers falling flat on their face are slim to none. The Tigers are 7 games up on the Royals. The Indians are up a game and a half.

In the West three times are ahead of KC. The A’s and Angels even further out in front than the Tigers. Then Seattle is there at 52 wins. In the East  The O’s, Jays and Yanks are all up on the Royals. The White Sox, Red Sox, and Rays are all hanging around with the Royals.

Now I would love for the Royals to go out and get another ace but I know that isn’t going to happen. I know there is not a ton of cash coming from management to bring in new talent via trade or free agency next year.

So, what should the team do? This was the year we have all been told was worth waiting for since back in 2004.

The Options

Billy Butler

1. Keep Billy Butler this year and get him to take less than 12.5 mil next year. Billy has had a down year and can’t do anything other than hit. I have never been a big fan of 1/5 of the salary going to a DH.

2. Trade Billy for what you can get for him this season saving money this season and next for a more productive player. By my rough count shipping Billy out saves the team around 18-20mil over the next two seasons.

3. Keep Billy for this season and then tell him to walk or take 5-6 mil next year.

Big Game James

1. Keep him for the rest of this season and let him try and pitch the team into the playoffs. The odds of a playoff push seem to be getting farther and farther away each day. If Shields leave the Royals do get a 1st rounder next year in the draft but I honestly could careless about that.

2. Put him on the market trade him for young cheap prospects.

3. Put him on the market and take back a big leaguer who is on a bad contract but make his old team pick up a large chunk of that contract.

The Pen

1. Keep them all

2. Trade away one or two guys that are due for huge salary jumps.

Vargas

1. Keep Vargas

2. Trade him as fast as you can because you didn’t like his contract he signed this summer with the team.

These are the options as I see them.

This is the plan that I like

I like the idea of trading Billy Butler for a team that is willing to take on his salary and still send back a decent prospect only if it is part of a bigger plan.

This bigger plan would be to open the bidding on Shields and possibly Vargas. I would offer Shields a large contract extension this week. If he turns it down I start shopping him. I would also let it be known that Vargas is on the market. He has pitched very well this season but I still think his 4 year deal will come to hurt the team in year 3 0r 4.

If Shields turns down a long term deal at market value I call the Dodgers, the Cardinals, and the M’s right off the bat. Shields is a rental but I think all three of these teams have the money to keep him long term as well as the prospects to make a deal. The Dodgers also have a ton of outfield talent. Someone has to go eventually. If I am the Royals I ask for Kemp or Either and tell the Dodgers to pick up part of the bill. If Kemp is the target the Dodgers have to kick in more obviously but a deal built around Shields for Kemp and say 35 million and a low level prospect would allow the Dodgers to ad to their rotation without dealing away prospects. The Dodgers get to cut ties with Kemp for a small fee. Kemp gives the Royals a star on a deal that the team could stomach. Trading shields saves the Royals some cash that can be put towards Kemp. In this deal you also trade Butler saving the team another 20 mil that can be put towards Kemp. The Royals can call up Zimmer to finish the season hoping that Kemp’s bat and Zimmer ad a spark.

The Cardinals have fewer bad contracts but they do have more young talent. If the Cardinals believe the price on price is too high Davis could be an option. The something is true with the M’s

The idea of trading Vargas comes down to what a team will offer. I think that Royals have to be thinking about making bold moves that keeps the hope alive for next season while still being able to make a run at this year.

The MLB Draft Is Broken & I Have An Idea……FIX IT!

I used to write about baseball for baseballdigest.com I70baseball.com. That being said I still have no clue what I am talking about but which means I am just as qualified as the rest of the MLB.

This week we saw the Houston Astros swing and miss on a years worth of baseball planning. The Astros did not sign their number 1 pick in this years draft. They also failed to sign several other players Jacob Nix a 5th rounder and Mac Marshall a 21st rounder. This is the third time ever in the history of the draft a number 1 pick hasn’t signed.

I have several issues with the current system. I will address them all but I am going to start with the massive fuck up that not singing Brady Aiken was for the worst team in sports.

The Astros are the worst team in sports and they are proud of it. The team had a plan and it was simple make shitty look good. The Astros as an organization set out to put together the worst team they could over a 3-4 year period so they could stockpile young talent and hopefully have a good team in 5 years. I am not a fan of this plan but for a second there it looked like this plan might be working.

On paper the Astros were looking like next year and the year after might just be amazing. I am not saying they won’t be because Springer is still a great prospect not to mention the other dozen or so guys they have waiting to prove something but the 1’s are struggling. It is less than three years out from their first number 1 pick and we already know one of them will never have a successful career for the Astros (Aiken). We have seen Appeal struggle far more than anyone thought he would two years ago. Lastly we are still waiting to see what will come from Carlos Correa. Springer the 11th overall pick is the only one showing flashes of greatness in the bigs.

This plan of be horrible for a year or two is more of a basketball idea. I honestly don’t think it is a great plan for baseball. Baseball has too many other options for a team to rebuild. The draft in my view is the biggest gamble of all. This isn’t the NBA or NFL which is really saying something. The NFL and NBA is 50/50 at best baseball is what 20/80 that a kid pans outs. Mike Trout went what pick? So, the Astros are gambling 5 years on rolling the baseball equal of snake eyes 5 times in a row with their life savings laying on the table.

Back to how the Astros threw away more than a year for nothing. The plan was to be horrible get the first pick. Well check, check, and check three years in a row so way to stick to a plan Houston. The next part was get the most talent they could for the best price. Check and check. So, here we are at the 2014 MLB Draft the Astros getting ready to ad another check to their box in this great rebuild plan. If I am not mistaken the draft takes a year to roll around and teams spend a ton of money watching guys. I also believe that the Astros weren’t shocked when they were called to make the 1st pick.

So, let me ask you this how in the hell do you draft a kid you claim has an elbow issue? I understand things happen but if you are going to pick a kid at 1 shouldn’t you make sure you don’t think he has a problem before you say his name. Secondly he is a high school he isn’t getting to the bigs in a few years anyway why throw away the pick you threw the season to get. Why is $2 million a big deal to you? All of these questions need answered but they won’t. The biggest question of all is how does baseball think that by rewarding the Astros the number 2 pick next year that things will get better.

The Astro’s have made themselves look like idiots. They threw away a season to draft a kid they don’t sign. Now they have to wait another year to see who they get because of a horrible season. I know if I am a fan I am running to give them my hard earned money. The Astro’s can not shoulder the whole blame here. MLB baseball is the biggest idiot in this mess. There are too many drafts, too many rules, and not enough common sense.

Let’s start with the whole draft system. The MLB is the only one that allows a kid to enter get drafted and then say nah. The MLB lets a team draft you and then say well you were a 2nd rounder so we are offering you 2nd round money. Go ask the Raiders, Jags, and Clippers what happens when you reach in the draft. The answer you pay dearly for it and get laughed at on Sportscenter. Why do we have like 600 rounds?

The first changes that need to be made to the MLB Draft are as follows.

The picks need a hard slot with a min and max that are really not that far apart. Teams need to draft based on talent not on wallet. Kids are telling bad small market teams I want over the max or I won’t go. Well kid you don’t get that power. You get picked packed your shit and go to Ohio.

The teams need to hold more power during the draft. Agents need to be phased out more or less during the draft. If you go 1 overall you should get 6.5-7 mil. The team and player can haggle over the 500k that is on the table. If a team drafts you they are on the hook for the amount no matter what happens after, there will be no more of this on second thought there is a blurry line on your mri. MLB clubs if draft Greg Oden deal with it life isn’t fair pay up. Now on the other hand if a kid says no I don’t want to sign he has two options go back to school if he is high schooler but he can not come back to the draft until he graduates college. That’s right bitches Graduates! None of this I am going to juco for basket weaving and sluts for a semester. The second option is that the player can be traded but the team trading for the player has to give up next years equal round pick and the cash value of current pick as a minimum to start any trade. The team drafting the player can ask for more if they believe they can get. If no trade occurs your rights are the picking teams for two years. Two years gives the team more leverage over other clubs and the player. Under this system they would not be allowed to pitch in indy leagues. They could choose not to sign but they would need team approval for any athletic activity.

This gives more power to the small market clubs because it decreases the leverage that a player has who doesn’t want to go to a city. It also allows the small market clubs to draft on talent and not on their wallet. Lastly large market teams would be allowed to overpay for these picks just like in all other sports. Are telling me the Yankees wouldn’t throw in 10 years of picks and 50 mil on the next Strasburg. The rich need to be allowed to make bad choices. Bad choices are what fuel a balanced league. Let the Jerry Jones like owners do what they do.

There needs to be half as many rounds or maybe even less. I know all of you baseball purest say we have to fill out the minor leagues. Ok, let me stop you there. There are too many minor league teams. The NFL, NBA, and NHL all manage to work college kids with little experience into their sport. Why does it take 5 years to bring a college player to the bigs? It shouldn’t that is the answer. Fewer players drafted means fewer high school and underclassmen will be gambled on forcing them to go to or stay in college thus allowing for fewer minor league teams. This will also reduce the number of young kids that throw away their education due to the advice of greedy agents.

The draft needs to matter and to matter players/picks have to change hands. There is no next year turn around with the MLB Draft. Every other draft has that chance. Pick for players needs to happen. Could you imagine the July trade deadline with draft picks in play. You could have an NBA like rule of you can’t trade a 1st if you don’t have one the next year. I am fine with a rule that limits the trades but trades are a must.
